Gitanjali by Virgilio Sieni

Aesthetic Tender Feminine Minimalist Fashion Portrait Photo Collage (34)

Inspired by the great poet, writer, screenwriter Rabindranath Tagore, author of the collection of Geetanjali and Gardner. Through this project, Virgilio Sieni wants to explore how much of this type of sensitivity is expressed today in the new generations of dance in the subcontinent. The idea is to generate from meetings and practices with Indian dancers and gardeners a discussion that opens up to the composition of visual sensitivity, the representations of nature and the garden itself, the male and female figures present there, the rhythm, the scanning of emotions in the gestures of the body, hands and feet. The project is divided into workshops as part of the activities of the Italian Cultural Centre and, starting from these moments of interaction, in the production of individual and choral choreographic actions in historic gardens, museum institutions and institutional venues.

Gardeners from the Italian Culture Centre and from the National School of Drama have been selected to participate in the project that is meant to focus on the necessary care towards plants and trees in the urban context of Delhi, where thousands of visible/invisible gardeners make the city green by their daily intense work, irrespective of the weather conditions. Virgilio Sieni, also work with Indian classic dancers from different traditions, in order to compose a choreography where the western idea of the body and the Indian one will merge in the unique approach that makes Sieni one of the most powerful voices of the contemporary dance scene.

It is a cultural event involving Virgilio Sieni, 6 Indian classical dancers and 4 gardeners

Virgilio Sieni, after studying ballet and contemporary dance in Amsterdam, New York e Tokyo, in 1983 started his own dance company, Parco Butterfly, renamed Compagnia Virgilio Sieni 1992. It cooperates with Europe’s leading theatres and festivals, and in addition to designing dance performances it conducts a program of research, study and dissemination of contemporary choreography. Sieni has authored choreographies for Italy’s best theatres, including La natura delle cose (2008), and Tristes Tropiques (2010), inspired by Claude Lévi-Strauss. Since 2003, Sieni has headed CANGO-Cantieri Goldonetta, a space in Florence for body practices and for research on the languages of contemporary art. In 2007, he founded the Academy of gesture art.
