JIM PORTO, Singer, Pianist and Composer:

The singer, songwriter and pianist Jim Porto had his first contact with music at the age of six. He studied piano in his hometown, Rio
Grande (RS), mixing classical music with popular styles, such as
Samba and Bossa Nova. At age 18, he moved to Rio de Janeiro,
where he started playing in bars and nightclubs. It soon caught the
attention of foreign tourists. An invitation to a short stay in Rome,
Italy, led the artist to establish permanent bases in Città Eterna (the
‘Eternal City’, as Roma is known), where he now lives for over 40

On the Roman nights, Jim Porto played with American trumpet wizard Chet Baker – who also made a special appearance on three tracks from his first album (Rio), released in 1983. Jim also collects
partnerships with distinguished Brazilians. He shared the stage and
songs with Gilberto Gil, Alcione, Jorge Ben Jor, Marisa Monte, Milton Nascimento, Djavan, Caetano Veloso and João Gilberto. Along with his well established career in Italy, Jim Porto still performs concerts in Brazil (in August 2018, he was at “Blue Note“, in Rio de Janeiro).
Four of his songs have already integrated soundtracks of Brazilian
soap operas.

During his tours around the world, Jim Porto participated in major
festivals and played at famous Jazz houses in New York, Buenos
Aires, Barcelona, Milan and other Italian cities, as well as in Tabarka, Tunisia. Jim also performed in the main public spaces of the Italian capital, from Roma football stadium to Castel Sant’Angelo, a ruined castle of the Borgia family.

On tour in India in 2017, Jim Porto performed in Goa, Mumbai and
Delhi, obtaining great repercussion in the local press. The success of this first experience in Asia, where he played with well-known Indian musicians, resulted in other invitations to return to India. Jim has just performed at NCPA Festival (Tata Theatre, 28/11) and Bandra Festival (18/12) in Mumbai. After his show at the Piano Man, in New Delhi, he will perform at Mood Indigo Festival – IIT Bombay (27/12).

Italian immigrants settled in Brazil since mid-XIX Century have deeply influenced Brazil’s music by merging traditional Italian songs with other Brazilian styles. In the last 60 years, as Italian-Brazilian exchange begun to develop in both directions, Brazilian tunes have also started to influence Italian music.

The Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) is widely recognized as one of the finest in the world. Similarly, the Italian musical panorama enjoys an excellent international reputation in terms of musicality, being Italian considered one of the most beautiful spoken languages in the world.

Compositions by Italian great musicians like Lucio Dalla, Lucio Battisti, Umberto Tozzi, Gianni Morandi, Gianluca Grignani, Pepino Di Capri, Dante Pilade and Pino Daniele have gained Portuguese-lyrics in Brazil – played by famous singers from this country, such as Elis Regina, Roberto Carlos, Ana Carolina and Marisa Monte.
On the other hand, Brazilian artists such as Vinícius de Moraes, Chico Buarque and Toquinho have embraced the idea of pouring their songs in Italian language, with excellent artistic results in
both Italy and Brazil.

As an artist in the crossroad between Italy and Brazil, Jim Porto brings to New Delhi an inspired show built on countries musical dialogue.
