The fifth edition of the Habitat International Film Festival will take place from March 8th to 17th with over 60films from 30 countries, celebrating award-winning and critically acclaimed cinema from across the globe.
The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre will participate with two movies, the Oscar-nominated “Io Capitano”directed by Matteo Garrone and “Lubo” directed by Giorgio Diritti.
“Io Capitano” (2023), directed by Matteo Garrone | Friday, March 15th at 6:30pm
Io Capitano is the epic story of a teenage boy who, together with his cousin, decides to leave Dakar in Senegal and make his way to Europe. A contemporary Odyssey in which the protagonist must overcome a series of obstacles and in the process is transformed from a human to a commodity to an animal, finally becoming a hero.A grand adventure through the dangers of the desert, the horrors of the detention centers in Libya, the perils of the sea, the ambiguities and contradictions of human beings, in which dreams,the hopes and the ambitions of the main characters turn into a struggle for survival, where there is no space for piety.
Nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 2024 Academy Awards.

“Lubo” (2023), directed by Giorgio Diritti | Sunday, March 17th at 4:00pm
Lubo makes a humble living as a street performer when, in 1939, he is called to join the Swiss army to defend the border from a potential German invasion. Forced to abandon his family, he soon discovers that his wife tragically died while trying to stop the authorities from taking their three young children away. Targeted because they are Jenisch, a minority nomadic community, Lubo’s family falls victim to a national campaign for the‘re-education’ of street children. But Lubo know she will not find peace until he reunites with his children and gets justice for himself and his people- for which he is ready to go to extraordinary lengths. So begins a decades long journey for love and self-determination, an incredible adventure and an epic quest for freedom.
