Islamic Heritage in Italy & in Europe Lecture by Prof. Roberto Tottoli

The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre is pleased to collaborate with Prof. Roberto Tottoli for an upcoming project, Islamic Heritage in Italy & in Europe.

Roberto Tottoli
Degree in Oriental Languages and Literature from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (1988), PhD from L’Orientale University of Naples (1996). He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Lady Davis Fellowship) under the supervision of M.J. Kister (1993-94), and then taught in Turin (1999-2002) and at L’Orientale University of Naples since 2002, where he has been full professor of Islamic Studies since 2011.
He has been a Visiting Researcher/Professor at Princeton University (2014), Harvard (2015), EHESS in Paris (2016), the Institute for Advanced Study in Tokyo (2018), the University of Pennsylvania (2019) and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in 2016-17.

He has translated various texts of Islamic literature into Italian (including al-Muwatta’. Manuale di legge Islamica, Turin, 2011, winner of the King Abdullah ibn Abdulaziz International Award for Translation, 2015) and has edited works on Islam in the West (Routledge Handbook of Islam in the West, London, 2015) and on the history of Islamic civilisation (The Wiley Blackwell History of Islam, Hoboken, 2018, edited with A. Salvatore and B. Rahimi). He is Principal Investigator of the ERC Synergy EUQU- The European Qur’an project (2019-2026) and, since 2020, Rector of the University of Naples L’Orientale. A corresponding member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei since 2019, he has collaborated and continues to collaborate with Corriere della Sera and Il Mattino.
