The European Union Film Festival (EUFF) is an annual cultural event that showcases the diversity, creativity, and storytelling excellence of European cinema. Organized in collaboration with the embassies and cultural institutions of EU member states, the festival brings together a curated selection of contemporary films from across Europe — ranging from thought-provoking dramas and engaging documentaries to light-hearted comedies and innovative art films.

The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre is taking part with the screening of Familia (2024) directed by Francesco Costabile on Saturday, 1st November at 4:00pm in Istituto Cervantes.

Familia (2024) is a haunting and deeply human Italian drama adapted from Luigi Celeste’s memoir Non sarà sempre così. Set in working-class Rome, the film follows young Luigi, who grows up under the heavy shadow of a violent, absent father. His mother Licia and older brother Alessandro hold the household together, but the wounds of the past linger. When their father Franco suddenly reappears after ten years, the fragile balance of their lives is shattered.

With piercing realism and emotional restraint, Familia explores how violence, ideology, and love intertwine in the struggle to break free from inherited pain.

Familia was selected as Italy’s official submission for the 98th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category—an acknowledgment of its emotional power and universal resonance.
