2026 january(1)

The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre invites you to a special screening of the digitally restored film Il Sorpasso (1962), directed by Dino Risi. The film is presented as part of the Five Protagonists for Italian Cinema Film Festival devoted to Italian cinematography. The festival brings together five creative voices, each curating and presenting their favourite Italian film. Il Sorpasso, the first film in the series, has been selected and will be presented by acclaimed author Jhumpa Lahiri.

Il Sorpasso (1962), directed by Dino Risi, is a landmark of Italian commedia all’italiana that follows an impulsive road trip between Bruno, a brash and pleasure-seeking man, and Roberto, a shy law student, during a summer holiday in Italy. What begins as a light, humorous journey gradually reveals deeper contrasts in values and culminates in a powerful and unexpected turn, offering a sharp commentary on recklessness, masculinity, and the social transformations of Italy’s economic boom.

Vittorio Gassman delivers one of his most celebrated performances, earning both the David di Donatello and Nastro d’Argento for Best Actor, while Risi received international recognition for his direction.

Widely regarded as a classic of European cinema, the film was later selected for Italy’s official list of “100 Italian films to be saved,” underscoring its lasting cultural and cinematic significance.
