To celebrate the 50th year of its publication, the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre will host a reading of Elsa Morante’s award-winning novel “La Storia” performed by Italian actress Iaia Forte. The event is a continuation of the Week of Italian Language in the World.
La Storia by Elsa Morante is a powerful novel set in Rome during and after World War II. It follows the life of Ida Mancuso, a half-Jewish schoolteacher, and her two sons as they struggle to survive the chaos and devastation brought by the war. Through the family’s experiences, Morante portrays the deep scars left on ordinary people by historical events, shedding light on themes of loss, resilience, and the brutality of war. This epic story, filled with tragedy and compassion, captures the harsh realities of 20th-century Italy and remains a seminal work in Italian literature.
Elsa Morante (1912–1985) was an Italian novelist, poet, and essayist, celebrated for her deep explorations of human suffering, love, and historical trauma. Born in Rome, Morante was a significant literary figure of her time and one of Italy’s most influential female writers. Her works often center on personal and collective hardships, offering sharp critiques of the social and political forces that shape lives. Morante’s writing is known for its lyrical quality, psychological depth, and empathy for her characters, making her a central voice in Italian and European literature. Her other notable works include Menzogna e sortilegio (House of Liars) and L’isola di Arturo (Arturo’s Island), which won the prestigious Strega Prize.
