OPERAZIONE SAN GENNARO – Treasure of San Gennaro – Comedy – 1966

Cinema at the Institute: Incontri in biblioteca: Retrospective Nino Manfredi 1921-2004

In Italian, with subtitles in English

Three Americans, a woman and two men, arrive in Naples with the intention of committing the biggest crime of their life- robbing the treasure of San Gennaro, estimated at thirty billion lire. Recommended by Don Vincenzo, very powerful even behind bars, the American thieves turn to Armando Girasole, revered in all the slums and affectionately called “Dudu”. Unaware of the objective, the Neapolitan quickly collects a handful of “experts”; but when the target of the theft is revealed, Dudu, the good Neapolitan, hesitates. But when he realizes that with those thirty billion lire, he could be helping the Neapolitans- building houses for the poor in Vomero. He reconsiders the proposition. Don Vincenzo is consulted, who in turn is in doubt, prefers delegating the same case to San Gennaro. Dudu will design the theft on the same day as the Neapolitan song festival, knowing that the whole population of Naples that evening will be in front of their television sets. The objectives of the Americans, however, are not exactly identical to his.
