DELHI: IO LA CONOSCEVO BENE – I knew Her Well – Drama – 1965

In Italian, with subtitles in English

Cinema at the Institute: Retrospective Nino Manfredi

Adriana, a beautiful country girl, from Pistoia moved to Rome in search of fortune. She began working as a maid, then as a hairdresser, then in a film and finally as a cashier at a bowling alley. Gullible, naïve, ignorant, drawn only from the discs and the dance, she advances from one job to another, suffers from indifference and amorality from her male counterparts at every place that she goes to. Her every advantage, but Adriana does not realize it and, despite everything, full of hope, entrusts the hard-earned money in an ambiguous agent who looms the possibility of making a film with her. In reality, Adriana does some advertisements; takes part as an extra in a mythological film and presents some clothes in provincial theaters.

Neither the nostalgia of the country of origin, nor the interruption by an incipient maternity could save her. One day, when the disappointments will accumulate, it will make Adriana end her sad and empty existence by jumping from the balcony.
