Cinema at the Institute: Incontri in Biblioteca: Contemporary Italian
In Italian with subtitles in English
The last 40 years of Italian history are told through the story of a family. The main protagonist is Nicola who, during the flood in Florence in ’66, meets and falls in love with a woman and follows her to live with her in Torino.
Torino, ’70s, is facing problems of workers and immigrants from the South with terrorism in the background. This is the beginning that continues to this day and makes us wonder and ask ourselves what has changed since then and what has stayed the same.
Originally planned as a four-part mini-series, it was presented at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival where it won the « Un Certain Regard » award. The film also won the David di Donatello award, the Nastro D’Argento and the Golden Globe Award. It was then given a theatrical release in Italy in two three-hour parts in which 40 minutes were edited out. The complete version was aired in Italy from December 7 to 15, 2003 on Rai Uno in four parts.
