The psychoanalyst Giovanni Sermonti lives in Ancona with his wife Paola and two adolescent children: he loves his job and family. He is disturbed by the news that his son would steal a fossil from the archive of the school with a friend. A call from a very sick patient changes his plans for the day and he waives the idea of spending the morning with his son. Andrea goes for scuba diving with some mates and dies because of an obstruction in a blood vessel. The mourning, the misunderstandings, the different ways to deal with pain undermine family unity.
One day a letter arrives from a friend of Andrea….
