Bell’Italia: Arezzo – A corner of Tuscany

The city and ‘comune’ of Arezzo is located in Tuscany in central Italy, 80 kilometres southeast of Florence. In ancient times, Arezzo was one of the twelve most important Etruscan cities and the third largest city in the Augustan period. During the Renaissance, it became home to the famous sequence of frescoes known as The History of the True Cross in the church of San Francesco di Arezzo, painted by the pre-eminent painter Piero della Francesca. These frescoes were recently restored and attract visitors from all over the world. Today, the city is home to a small population of 99,000 people. Despite its modest size, it holds an important place in the rich history of the Italian peninsula.
