The Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast – Discovering the heart of the region of Naples.

The coast descending south from Naples is dotted with some of the greatest archeological wonders in the world. In August, 79 CE, an immense tragedy struck this region: the eruption of Vesuvius, a volcano that had been lying dormant for centuries, such that the inhabitants of the area were unaware of its nature. The eruption proved catastrophic, covering the entire region south of Naples with several metres of hot ash and destroying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It was only 1700 years later that they were rediscovered and gradually brought to light, revealing to us the kind of daily lives led by their inhabitants and the opulence of their aristocratic homes. The entire region is scattered with invaluable Roman ruins, especially the Villa Poppaea in Oplonti which belonged to the wife of Emperor Nero, all the way down to the Amalfi Coast, with its matchless natural beauty and cultural landscape.

The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre continues its collaboration with Bell’Italia 88 to bring to the Indian public many of our country’s attractions. Starting today, and over the next 6 months, you will be able to virtually tour 6 important cultural cities of Italy. One city will be the focus each month, with a walking tour illuminating its most important monuments, followed by a talk including a visit to a museum or a historical building.

We shall begin with Rome, the capital city, moving on to Sicily in August for a visit to the marvelous Palermo, with its memories of Arab domination and the subsequent enlightened reign of the Swabians. After which there will be Florence, Naples, Venice and Milan in the months to follow.
